Most piano finish damage we see was done by a well-meaning owner with the wrong bottle in hand.
The case
Dust with a clean, dry microfiber cloth, always in the direction of the grain. For fingerprints on a high-polish polyester finish, breathe on the surface and buff with microfiber. Avoid silicone-based furniture sprays entirely — they contaminate the finish and make future refinishing far harder.
The keys
Wipe with a barely damp cloth, one octave at a time, drying immediately. Never let moisture run down between keys; it reaches the wood and the bushings. For yellowed plastic tops, mild dish soap on a damp cloth is as far as you should go.
Inside the piano
Leave it alone. Vacuum hoses, dusters and household cleaners cause real damage among the strings and action. Ask your technician to clean the interior during a service visit — it takes minutes and costs nothing extra with most appointments.
Habits that help
- Close the fallboard when the piano is not in use.
- No drinks on the lid, ever.
- Keep it out of direct sunlight to prevent finish fading and uneven drying.
- Play it regularly — pianos in use stay healthier than pianos in storage.
