Placement
Interior wall where possible. Away from HVAC vents, exterior doors, fireplaces and direct sunlight. Rugs and soft furnishings tame brightness in a hard-surfaced room far more effectively than voicing does.
Tuning schedule
New pianos need three to four tunings in the first year while new strings stretch. A used piano coming from another home needs one tuning after two to four weeks of acclimation, then the normal twice-yearly rhythm.
Humidity
Put a hygrometer on the lid in week one. If your readings swing more than 15 points across the year, budget for an in-piano climate system — it will pay for itself in stable tunings and avoided repairs.
Playing and care
- Play it often; idle pianos develop sluggish action and dust problems.
- Close the fallboard between sessions.
- Never place drinks or plants on the case.
- Book the first service before you need it, and keep the technician's notes.
